In what might be the shock of this year’s gaming awards season, Vampire Survivors is officially the BAFTA Gaming Award’s Best Game, beating out competition from titans like Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, and other massive titles from the past twelve months. From the reaction of Poncle team members at the awards, they’re as surprised as we are.
The breakout success of Vampire Survivors is hardly news by now, with our thoughts on the mobile port summed up best in our glowing 9/10 Vampire Survivors review, but it’s still a shock to see the game pick up such a prestigious award when facing off against juggernaut titles. To make the night even better for Poncle, Vampire Survivors also picked up the Game Design award, beating out even more much-loved games like Cult of the Lamb and Horizon Forbidden West.
While Vampire Survivors was the big winner on the night, it was a solid showing too for our star-surfing buddy Kirby. Kirby and the Forgotten Land took home the Family award, with Nintendo’s UK Director of Marketing taking to the stage to accept the gong.
In general, this year’s BAFTA Gaming Awards was a better showing for mobile and Switch titles, with two out of the six games up for Best Game available on mobile – Vampire Survivors and Marvel Snap – and Cult of the Lamb from the Switch library. We’re hoping that big wins for both Poncle’s casual rogue-like and Marvel Snap continue as we reach more award shows, further boosting mobile’s status as a gaming platform.
