Pokémon Scarlet and Violet might have a few issues, as you can read in our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet review, but one element that hasn’t disappointed is the excellent new characters and the script. The region of Paldea is full of fun folk, and the storylines you encounter and experience are some of the best the series has ever had. But when talking to one particular character in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, cheugy is mentioned.
A phrase pretty popular with young gamers and zoomers, cheugy might be lost on some of the old fans, especially if you remember playing Pokémon Red and Blue when they came out! As mentioned by Director Clavell when you enter the academy, the phrase cheugy is pretty new. So, let us explain to you what it all means with our cheugy guide. Let’s dive into our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet cheugy guide
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet cheugy
What does cheugy mean?
A phrase coined by zoomers to describe the behaviour of millennials now getting older, cheugy is a derogatory term for something being uncool or untrendy. Being smack bang in that older age bracket, I’m pretty sure everything I like is cheugy. But for further clarification, Urban Dictionary describes cheugy as “The opposite of trendy. Stylish in middle school and high school but no longer in style. Used when someone still follows these out-of-date trends. This may include but not be limited to fashion, habits on social media, usage of slang, etc.”
For even more clarification, popular Instagram account cheuglife has a comprehensive feed of things that are considered by the youth to be cheugy, including but not limited to:
- Minion memes
- Dunder Mifflin merchandise
- Uggs
- The Black Eyed Peas
- Disney memorabilia
- Being #TeamEdward or #TeamJacob
- Frappuccinos
- Chino shorts
- Live Laugh Love signs
Chances are if you’re having to ask what cheugy means, you’re it. In the case of Pokémon, given Clavell’s older age compared to other characters and the young attendees of the academy, we can probably infer that the gentle character has been called cheugy once or twice, and certainly enough times for it to stick in his brain. Its inclusion in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet script is a great piece of localisation, and will likely get a good chuckle out of younger gamers, while old people like myself will end up searching for the word’s meaning like you just have. Life comes at you fast, and before you know it, you’re cheugy.
Right, that’s it for now, folks. Maybe go and drink some herbal tea, watch another rerun of The Office US, or put on your favourite Twilight movie, but for goodness sake don’t do it too quickly or you’ll hurt yourself.
