What is Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts?
What we mean by Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts isn’t to be confused with one of the Hogwarts Legacy classes, Defence Against the Dark Arts. Instead, this is to do with the three unforgivable curses, though your professor is likely to at least mention them in your lessons.
What are Hogwarts Legacy’s unforgivable curses?
There are three unforgivable curses that make up the Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts, and they are:
- Cruciatus Curse (Crucio)
- Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra)
- Imperius Curse (Imperio)
Crucio
To put it bluntly, the Cruciatus Curse is of a torturous nature, inflicting unimaginable pain on those that are struck by it. However, to truly cause pain and suffering, it’s said that you must harbour pure hatred for your victim and enjoy how it feels to harm someone.
Avada Kedavra
If you think Crucio sounds cruel beyond measure, prepare yourself, as Avada Kedavra is the worst of the three unforgivable curses. This spell is also known as the Killing Curse, and yes, it does exactly what it says on the tin as it causes instant death to those that are hit with it.
Imperio
While still unforgivable, Imperio is perhaps the most forgivable of the three curses, purely because it’s not torturous, and nor does it inflict instant death. However, what it does do is make the victim unquestionably loyal to the caster, which means their free will is gone, and they’re at the mercy of their new master.
How do I get the Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts?
To get your hands on the unforgiveable curses in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to follow a series of side quests with Sebastian Sallow. During specific missions, you can learn the various spells – as soon as the option pops up to learn one of the Dark Arts, take it.
How do I unlock the Hogwarts Legacy Dark Arts battle arena?
Currently, the only we know of is to either purchase the collector’s or deluxe editions of the game. Should an in-game method on how to get the Dark Arts battle arena in Hogwarts Legacy arise at launch, wee’ll update this guide.

Hogwarts Legacy has drawn considerable criticism during its development, largely due to the fact that the creator of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, has made a number of transphobic remarks on social media in recent years.
While Avalanche has confirmed that J.K. Rowling is not “directly involved” in the development of Hogwarts Legacy, it is working with “her team” and Portkey Games, a Warner Bros. label dedicated to launching new experiences inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original stories. It is currently unclear whether she will earn any royalties from the game’s sale, but it is likely given it is based on her original body of work.
