Teyvat is always expanding, and the next nation we explore is Genshin Impact’s Fontaine. This watery wonderland is growing close, and thanks to the rich lore of the world and hints from official content, as well as a few leaks, we’ve got some idea of what to expect. Let’s dive into Genshin Impact’s Fontaine region!
What is Genshin Impact’s Fontaine?
Fontaine is one of the Seven Nations of Teyvat. The people of Fontaine worship the hydro Archon, also known as the God of Justice. Genshin Impact’s Dainsleif states that the God of Justice “lives for the spectacle of the courtroom”, and Genshin Impact’s Yanfei describes Fontaine’s legal system as notoriously complicated.
Fontaine prides itself as the central hub of culture and art. Francis, a traveling merchant from Fontaine, describes it as a ‘place of true beauty and elegance’. It’s also the home of The Steambird newspaper, a publication where Genshin Impact’s Mona works as a columnist, along with reporter Genshin Impact’s Charlotte.
Fontaine is most likely based on 1910’s France, with its name meaning ‘fountain’ in French – a reference to it being the nation of the hydro Archon. Both rock ‘n’ roll music and the Kamera originate from Fontaine, and dialogue with Fontaine NPCs highlights that the nation has steampunk-esque elements, such as an air rail.
An interesting fact about Fontaine is that all Oceanids originally come from there, including Rhodeia of Loch, the Lochfolk that dwells in the waters just outside Qingce Village. The Spring Fairy of Springvale is also a Lochfolk from Fontaine. Currently, lore implies that the Lochfolk left Fontaine due to the ideals of the new hydro Archon.
The recent version 3.8 special program gave us our first proper look at Fontaine and it is brimming with information. The main city, Fleuve Cendre (thanks, YouTube subtitles), features tall and modern white buildings on a long main street. There’s also an under-city sewer system.
Back on the surface, we see the alchemy bench outside a store, a plant shop, and what appears to be a music venue. We also see a lot of new NPCs. Women wear long, fancy dresses, dogs wear top hats, and there’s even a robot walking around.
As for outside the city, the trailer shows off waterways with boats floating lazily along between mountains and across bodies of water.
Is there underwater exploration in Fontaine?
Get your diving apparatus ready because underwater exploration is now confirmed for Fontaine. A mysterious Genshin Impact melusine character spies on the Traveler – in their hydro-hinted clothing – as they dive into the water. Then, the trailer showcases some underwater combat and a very cute walrus creature, and some crab-type critters.

Genshin Impact Fontaine release date speculation
Currently, Hoyoverse hasn’t announced a release date for Fontaine. In the Teyvat Chapter Storyline preview, Fontaine is chapter IV, with its Archon Quest line taking the name ‘Masquerade of the Guilty’. Therefore, we’ll likely see Fontaine in version 4.0, after we’ve completed Genshin Impact’s Sumeru in version 3. It’s coming up quickly!
Are there any playable Fontaine characters?
This section will round up any confirmed information and reliable leaks pertaining to new characters coming with Fontaine’s release. In the above teaser trailer, the following characters are shown:
- Furina, the hydro Archon of Fontaine. She will likely have another name (as Nahida does with Kusanali). Leaks suggest that Genshin Impact Focalors (Furina’s other name) uses the hydro element and a sword weapon.
- Chief Justice Neuvillette is looking like the only tall male model for Fontaine. You may recognize the name – he’s quoted in Nahida’s detailed Hoyolab post prior to her release. Nothing pertaining to Neuvillette’s kit has come out just yet.
- Charlotte, who we met in the 3.7 update’s TCG event, is more than likely to be a playable character soon. She’s allegedly a four-star cryo user.
- Lyney and Lynette are set to release in the first Fontaine patch. Lyney is a five-star pyro bow user and Lynette is a four-star anemo sword user.
- The dark and handsome Wriothesley is a mystery for now, though the more reliable leaks say he is cryo with a hefty focus on physical damage.
- Sigewinne currently has no information floating around at all, other than what she looks like.
- Navia may be Fontaine’s only geo unit. For now, we don’t know much else about her.
- Clorinde, referred to as Captain R in a lot of leaks, is an electro unit.
- Freminet is Lyney and Lynette’s younger brother who is an accomplished diver. He uses cryo and a claymore.
- The Harbinger Arlecchino, though not from Fontaine, appears in the video and its storyline.
