An award-winning and historically designated Toronto landmark that was built in the early ’50s is currently for sale.
Constructed in 1954 and designed by John C. Parkin, 50 Park Road is a six-minute walk to Yonge and Bloor, which is one of the busiest commercial intersections in Canada.
In 1992, the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) placed the building on the market for sale in order to support their decision to move to the suburbs. That year, Roger du Toit, Sheila du Toit, Bob Allsopp, and John Hillier purchased the building to accommodate their growing practice, DuToit Allsopp Hillier (DTAH) at the time. The building is now up for sale again.
“Completed in 1954, 50 Park Road was designed as the first permanent headquarters for the Ontario Association of Architects,” writes the OAA in a description of its former building. “It was the result of a design competition won by John B. Parkin Associates, one of the province’s leading modernist firms at the time, with John C. Parkin as project architect. The new headquarters was critically acclaimed as a landmark modern building in Toronto in the press and architectural publications of the period. It was also successful at providing a unifying focal point for Toronto’s architects, with its high-profile design injecting renewed pride and energy into the profession at a critical time in the city’s development.”
Close to the north/south and east/west TTC subway lines, shopping, hotels, and restaurants, the landmark is situated in a park setting overlooking Rosedale Valley Road and has direct access to the Bayview Extension and the Don Valley Parkway.
The landmark is currently listed for $7,995,000.
