He earned his Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK and his Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture at the University of Liverpool, UK.

Having joined the firm five years ago, Paynter oversees a studio of 40+ architects and designers with responsibility for projects that span large scale master planning, complex adaptive reuse and reposition projects, and new, ground-up buildings, within the Toronto office.

His leadership further extends to his role as the Northeast region’s Practice Area Leader for Corporate Office Buildings. In this role, Paynter will lead the region’s thought-leadership and market position around the most pressing challenges facing landlords and developers.

“We are delighted to recognize the hard work and talent of our newest principal, Steven. He is widely acknowledge as an expert in his field and is considered an invaluable strategic partner to all of his clients. He brings a wealth of experience, market knowledge, and design know-how to the table,” said Eric Ginsburg, Principal and Managing Director in Toronto.

Matthew Kobylar re-joins the firm as design director after a stint in London at an international firm where he led Deloitte’s Toronto office, a multi-award winning project.

Sought after for his deep bench of experience leading strategic workplace transformations across the legal and professional services sectors, Kobylar will work alongside Annie Bergeron, Principal and Design Director known for her expertise with tech and media companies.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Matthew back to Gensler,” said Filo Costa, Co-Managing Principal in Toronto. “His ability to weave strategy with award-winning design has resulted in workplaces that really move the needle for a wide range of organizations. His skills will be a great asses as we continue to explore the best ways to serve our clients.”
