The VELUX company announces the 2008 edition of the biennial international award, created in 2004, for students of architecture all over the world. This award is organized in collaboration with the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) and the International Union of Architects (UIA).
With the theme: of “Light of Tomorrow,” this award seeks to foster an open-minded dialogue on daylight in its widest sense. While there are no specific categories, entries may focus on: sunlight as a natural source of lighting and energy; daylight’s contribution to visual quality and comfort in interior living spaces; rethinking daylight in urban living contexts; the importance of sunlight and daylight in sustainable architecture in harmony with the rhythms of nature; more abstract concepts like daylight versus artificial light, day versus night, in versus out.
The international jury is comprised of: Enrique Browne, architect, Chile; Eva Jiricna, architect, UK/Czech Republic, representing the UIA; Michel Langrand, President of VELUX, France; Huat Lim, architect, Malaysia; Francis Nordeman, architect, France, representing the EAAE; Hani Rashid, architect, USA; and Mattias Sauerbruch, architect, Germany.
The deadline for registration is March 8, 2008, and the deadline for submitting entries is May 8, 2008. The deadline for receiving posted projects is June 8, 2008, and the awards ceremony will be held in November 2008.
The award is open to individual students and multidisciplinary teams registered in aschool of architecture for the period 2007/2008. They will participate in association with atutor. Registration is made exclusively online at the VELUX site, and there is no registrationfee. Projects can be submitted on two A1-sized boards, or on a CD-ROM, or uploaded to adedicated website.
The total prize money is 30,000: 1st prize is 8,000 minimum for the winningstudent or team with 2,000 going to the tutor(s); 2nd prize is 4,000 minimum for thewinning student or team with 1,000 going to the tutor(s). Ten honourary mentions may also beawarded and in addition students will award a student prize following a vote. All projectssubmitted for the 2008 award will be exhibited in Turin during the UIA World Congress, taking place from June 29 to July 3, 2008.
