Coinciding with the launch of the book Canadian Modern Architecture: 1967-2017, co-published by Princeton Architectural Press and Canadian Architect magazine, this plenary session at the 2019 RAIC Festival examines the state of Canadian architectural practice in three vital areas.

Book co-editor Graham Livesey sets the stage by asking: What are key trends in Canadian architecture today? And how does the history of Canadian architecture inform its future?

Steve Mannell, director at the College of Sustainability at Dalhousie University, will comment on the rich legacy of sustainable architecture in Canada, and where it may advance in the decade leading up to 2030. Architecture critic Odile Hénault will draw from her book chapter to present emerging trends in architecture for and by First Nations communities, an area crucial to Canada today. Lola Sheppard, co-founder of Lateral Office and associate professor at the University of Waterloo, will provide insight into emerging trends in northern Canadian communities, where unique environmental, logistical, and cultural challenges shape architectural responses.

A panel discussion, moderated by book co-editor Elsa Lam of Canadian Architect, will broach the overlaps and connections between these topics.
