The Canada Council for the Arts has named Saint John’s Acre Architects as the winners of this year’s Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture. The New Brunswick-based architectural firm will receive a $50,000 stipend for the work program, travel and public presentation. The Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture is awarded to a young practitioner of architecture or an architectural firm that has completed their first built works and has demonstrated exceptional artistic potential.
Based out of Saint John, New Brunswick, Acre Architects is a practice of Storied Architecture – inspiring people to live great stories. The firm is committed to creating original, provocative, contextually driven design. Acre Architects believes that at the core of every idea is a unique story.
Acre Architects founders and team leaders are Stephen Kopp and Monica Adair, both Master of Architecture graduates from the architecture, landscape and design program at the University of Toronto. At the core of the group’s philosophy is an understanding of the unique opportunity that creative collaboration offers for the exploration of new ideas and the achievement of new outcomes. Acre Architects are also leaders in cultural tourism, and are expanding the role of contemporary architecture in Atlantic Canada.
Together with David Penner and Ted Watson, Monica Adair will also serve as one of this year’s jurors for our own 51st annual Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence, which are accepting submissions until September 20.
While submissions for next year’s Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture will open in January, entries are now being accepted for the Prix de Rome in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners, which is awarded to a recent graduate from a Canadian architectural school.
