The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada (MOCA) is in a defining phase of its evolution, as it moves into a landmark heritage building and further advances 20 years of exhibiting, collecting and nurturing innovative contemporary art and cultural practices. On September 22, 2018, MOCA will move into a 55,000 square foot purpose-designed home — adapted by Toronto-based architectsAlliance, led by Peter Clewes — in a former industrial space at the heart of a new neighbourhood in the Lower Junction.
“MOCA needs to be ground breaking…that goes for everything we do. It is part of our DNA and we should always be asking ourselves how we best engage the diverse voices of our audiences — from local residents to international tourists, artists, creators, students, donors, business and industry, media, and government. We will be a ‘listening museum’ – a welcoming place that encourages broad access to the practices and thinking of contemporary art,” said Heidi Reitmaier, MOCA Executive Director and CEO.
The museum’s opening kicks off with the ‘Free International Grand Opening Weekend,’ which takes place on September 22 and 23. “Join us to celebrate MOCA’s grand opening and enjoy free admission all weekend. Following the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday morning, explore all five floors of the museum all weekend on us. Meet the artists and learn about their work,” the MOCA website explains.
The artists in attendance for the grand opening weekend celebrations include Hiba Abdallah, Justin Langlois, Andreas Angelidakis, Matilda Aslizadeh, Adrian Blackwell, Rajni Perera, Jeremy Shaw, and Nep Sidhu.
