Between 1901 and 1906 this man loaned money out to towns specifically for the building of libraries, resulting in 125 being built in Ontario alone. These old buildings vary in appearance quite a bit, but are quite beautiful, part of our history, thanks to this Scot. I would hate to see such an institution with an ultra modern look to it. Make it something memorable, with character.

Comment on Editorial: Architecture’s Climate Crisis by Tom Ponessa https://www.canadianarchitect.com/architectures-climate-crisis/#comment-54412 Thu, 14 Feb 2019 01:55:37 +0000 https://www.canadianarchitect.com/?post_type=feature&p=1003746280#comment-54412 Yes, get educated. Architects and engineers who are already building this way present their work at our conference in Toronto every year. They bring outstanding built examples of international and local designs that address climate change and carbon. At the Green Building Festival on October 8th this year Dietmar Eberle (among others) will present his Austrian HQ building that has no mechanical HVAC system. The full agenda will be up soon and a taste of it is at https://sbcanada.org/conferences/green-building-festival-2019/

The mishmash of competing green standards out there with voluntary enrolment/compliance means we need a mandated federal level of commitment to an energy use per area metric or TEUI/TEDI, and then let the Architects and Engineers decide how to meet those goals – with the standard of their choice. https://www.andythomson.ca/2018/11/20/how-many-miles-per-gallon-does-your-building-get/

The problem is that current suppliers are violently in objection to allow these technologies to enter the supply chain leaving us without any oxygen to move forward and delaying the industry to enter into a better future.

Comment on Redevelopment plans raise concerns for Ontario Place supporters by Tim Hayduk https://www.canadianarchitect.com/redevelopment-plans-raise-concerns-for-ontario-place-supporters/#comment-54264 Wed, 06 Feb 2019 20:45:52 +0000 https://www.canadianarchitect.com/?p=1003746216#comment-54264 I visited Ontario Place a decade ago and thought it was a tremendous site, well worth preserving. So many exposition buildings are not thought of as lasting and yet what would San Francisco be without the Palace of Fine Arts or Seattle without the Space Needle? There is little left of Expo ‘70 in Osaka. Ontario Place speaks to the architecture of the late 60’s/early 70’s and is still inspiring today. Do not destroy this unique and wonderful landmark.

One has to believe in the benefits of good urban planning without the meddling of politicians. Lots of new roads are being built [and will continue to be built causing serious congestion for some time], two super hospitals have been built using a public/private partnership [but old problems of insufficient budgets and construction defects persist], the Royalmount project has been approved by one municipality [representing 20,000 occupants], the closure of the road across the mountain was done without prior consultation of adjacent communities, the Provincial Government wants to do away with existing school boards ..etc

Comment on Big Ideas, Small Houses by Jarren Butterworth https://www.canadianarchitect.com/big-ideas-small-houses/#comment-53822 Wed, 09 Jan 2019 02:03:03 +0000 http://pubx.canadianarchitect.com/features/big-ideas-small-houses/#comment-53822 The “disharmony” street looks like a nice organic neighbourhood street that’s developed over time with a variety of styles and diversity but a general “harmony” of massing. The “harmony” example looks like a gross master-planned development that no one will like in 20 years.

The most sought-after and beloved neighbourhoods in my city (victoria) look like the first example, a mix of both style and size. Simple but functional post-war bungalows next to grand old 1900’s clap board heritage houses with the odd mid-century modern split level peppered throughout.

Yeah, it’s me, commenting on a 2009 article about house shapes.

Congratulations on this exciting new project! NBI is currently tracking 17 other zero energy hopeful commercial buildings in Canada, and will be happy to include this as the 18th so far. Looking forward to seeing a net zero performance outcome at the building’s first anniversary!

Comment on Stantec Architecture part of consortium for CAMH project on Queen Street West by Max Driver https://www.canadianarchitect.com/camh-partner-queen-street-redevelopment/#comment-53431 Wed, 19 Dec 2018 14:25:49 +0000 https://www.canadianarchitect.com/?p=1003737723#comment-53431 They use jargon about opening up the space but it’s already a very closed looking concrete cult compound. I note the brain stimulation centre (such euphemistic language for money and power driven quackery (like and including rtms and ai, etc) the only real application for which is genocide) AND the commercial retail space – more unsustainable Gravity Pope garbage? For the condo crowd? Did anybody notice we have a housing crisis and homelessness is bad for mental health – and Gifts of Light doesnt help? Face it, CAMH Psychiatry is one big arrogant sell-out and this is their Babylon.
