In what was an already very Mario-filled Nintendo Direct (it’s like Nintendo wants us to completely rewrite our list of the best Mario games on Switch), we’re getting a brand-new mainline title with the Super Mario Bros. Wonder release date. Our favorite plumber is back to side-scrolling along with a bunch of friends, both old and new.
The key element that makes Super Mario Bros. Wonder special is the aptly named Wonder Flower. Touching this glowing guy unlocks the wonder of the Mushroom Kingdom by bringing pipes to life, summoning hordes of enemies, and giving enemies fresh looks. In the first 30 seconds of the trailer alone we spotted giant purple hippos, piranha plants leaving their pipes, and roller-skating Koopas!
If you’re not the biggest fan of Mario Mario himself, you can play as previously playable characters like Luigi and Toad, or take on the powers of Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, or Yoshi. I’m quite partial to the green dino myself. Even our very own Mario-hating Kayleigh said that this game looks good, so we can’t wait to see more.
As well as the Wonder Flower mixing up the classic Mario formula, we got a glimpse of the newest mushroom at Mario’s disposal – the Elephant Mushroom. I’m not sure that was on anyone’s bingo card for this Direct, but it looks pretty nifty.
