The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had pretty big shoes to fill after the massive success of Breath of the Wild, and many of us were curious to see whether it would truly live up to its predecessor as one of the best Zelda games of all time. Well, now we’re wondering no more, as Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sales hit a staggering ten million units worldwide in the first three days after launch.
This meteoric milestone sees ToTK claim the title as the fastest-selling game in the Legend of Zelda series to date, which is a pretty hefty crown considering the undeniable impact the previous titles have made on the gaming industry over the past three-and-a-half decades. But that’s not the only badge of honor ToTK wears, as it’s officially Europe’s fastest-selling game for Nintendo Switch, as well as the fastest-selling Nintendo game for any system in Europe.
In response to the game’s colossal success, Nintendo of Europe President Stephan Bole states “in its seventh year, Nintendo Switch momentum continues strongly, as this record-breaking launch shows”, going on to highlight “we’re so grateful for the support of fans for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and are truly looking forward to seeing their adventures and creations as they journey into Hyrule”.
The long-awaited sequel launched on Friday, May 12 to critical acclaim, with the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Metacritic score of 96 out of 100 making it the highest-rated game of the year so far, and its OpenCritic score seeing it claim the title of the highest-rated game ever on the site.
In our own Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom review, we also gave it a full 10/10, praising it for its ability to “take the magic of Breath of the Wild and make it bigger, sillier, and much more fun”, continuing on to say that “it’s an excellent time, packed to the brim with beauty and joy, and there’s nothing like it on the Switch”.
