Thanks to franchises such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, the world is obsessed with wizards games, but there's a good reason for this – who doesn't want to be an all magical being? For years, kids have taken it upon themselves to sleep under the stairs in hopes of getting an acceptance letter to Hogwarts, and don't even get me started on the famous “you shall not pass” line, many a time I was denied access down a hallway at school due to this.
So, we all want to be a magic-user, that's a given, and videogames are a great way to make this dream a reality, but what are the best wizard games? Well, I bibbidi-bobbidi-booed into the magical world of Hogwarts, joined hobbits as they tried to destroy the precious, and cast so much magic that I'm the new Merlin, all just so I can tell you what the best wizard games are.
We also happen to have a list of the best magic games, just in case this selection isn't spellbinding enough for you. Or, there's our Disney games selection for magic of a different kind. Of course, we understand that some of you are muggles, and like it that way, so take a peek at our best iPhone games and best Android games guides to see what else is out there.
Anyway, onto the best wizard games on Nintendo Switch and mobile:
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery – mobile
Of course, Harry Potter is on this list, and spoiler alert, this isn’t the only entry for this wizarding IP. So, in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, you get to create your own witch or wizard to experience this story with.
During your time at the famous school for witchcraft and wizardry, you get to select which house you belong to (I’m a Slytherin, in case you’re wondering) and attend classes where you learn all about spells and potions. You also get to form relationships with your fellow students – perhaps there’s a potion that can help with that?
Dark Souls – Switch
Hear me out. In Dark Souls, you have the option of using magic, and there’s even a class known as sorcerer, which is just a fancier way of saying wizard, so by my extremely sound logic, you’re a wizard, Chosen Undead. Hmm, doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it? Nonetheless, my point remains valid. In Dark Souls, you must explore the lands of Lordran, which is quite the perilous journey.
On your travels, you encounter some rather tough foes, but we can help you beat the odds and overcome this legendary RPG with our Dark Souls bosses guide. We also happen to have specific content about Dark Souls Gwyndolin, Dark Souls Gwyn, and Dark Souls Artorias, if you want to know about those you meet in this world.
Wizard of Legend – mobile
With a name like Wizard of Legend, of course, a game like this is here. In this title, you play as a wizard (a real shocker, I know), but the best thing about this title is the 2D roguelike mechanics matched with top-down gameplay that feels so satisfying. In order to succeed and defeat the ten-floor dungeon, you need to create devastating combos through a unique blend of your magic spells.
The Lord of the Rings: War – mobile
It features wizards in some capacity, and that’s enough to warrant The Lord of the Rings: War a place on this list. It’s a must-play for any fan of Tolkien’s universe, as it sees you go to war, as both good and evil seek the ring.
You get to join one of several factions, get tips from recognisable characters, and assemble an army full of knights, archers, armed warriors, and more. However, in order to truly succeed you must expand your territory, collect resources, develop settlements, and make your mark on the world.
Hogwarts Legacy – Switch
In Hogwarts Legacy, you find yourself in a unique position, and not just because you get to create your own character, but because you play as a fifth year, rather than a first-year student. On top of that, the game also gives you an in-depth glimpse into life at Hogwarts in the 1890s.
Throughout your time at Hogwarts, you get to attend class, learn new spells and potions, and form friendships (perhaps even a relationship?) with your fellow pupils. This action RPG provides a glimpse into the wizarding world quite unlike any before, and is highly recommended to unwavering fans of the series.
Elvenar
Fancy gathering together your own army of magic users and then using them to build your own fantasy kingdom? That’s exactly what you get to do in the free-to-play game, Elvenar. While there might not technically be any “wizards” as such, the game does have sorceresses, magical priests, mages, enchantresses, and other magical people and creatures, so that’s basically the same as having wizards, right?
In this game, you’re responsible for charting the course of a civilisation. That might mean that you rule with an iron fist, and decide to try and conquer the other nations around you, or it also might mean that you want to be a conscientious state that does its best to build trade relationships and be an all-round respectable member of the global community. You can choose whether you play as humans or elves, but either way, you’re going to find yourself spending a lot of hours in the world of Elvenar.
