It’s official, we’re getting a remake of Mario’s original turn-based adventure, and we already can’t wait to meet back up with Super Mario RPG’s Yoshi. No, not the regular Yoshi we know and love from the 2D or Mario party games, but the iconic tubby Yoshi from the original game. The absolute unit, meme legend, and chonkiest lad is coming back to make an HD appearance alongside Geno, Bowser, and the rest of the cast from the SNES title.
If you don’t know, the reason for chonky Yoshi’s popularity is his place in meme culture, with a 2017 render from Mario archive Supper Mario Broth turning into something of a sensation on Twitter, Tumblr, and beyond. Now, for the first time since chubby Yoshi’s rise to meme prominence, we’re going to get the real thing on our Switch screens.
We’re not the only ones looking forward to reuniting with our plus-size dinosaur pal. Since the Super Mario RPG announcement during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, we’ve seen Tweets such as ‘we need a chonky Yoshi plush’ and just ‘CHONKY YOSHI CHONKY YOSHI CHONKY YOSHI’. Clearly, so many of us can’t wait to see the dinosaur sitting like a tubby lil’ sweetheart waiting on our arrival.
Fortunately, we don’t have too long to wait, with the Super Mario RPG release date set for November 17, 2023. You can check out the trailer below.
There you have it, all you need to know about our deep-seated desire to catch up with the icon that is Super Mario RPG’s chonky Yoshi.
