Building on it success in previous years, the Architectural Institute of British Columbia’s (AIBC) popular Architecture in Schools (AIS) program has started once again for the 2004/2005 school year. To date this program has advanced the understanding the appreciation for architecture in students and their teachers across the province.
Founded in 1994 by the AIBC, this initiative was developed in the public interest specifically for K-12 educators and students to promote greater awareness and understanding of the relationships among human designed built environments and the natural world. The AIS program focuses on promoting the study of the built environment as art, science and as a manifestation of social values and ideals.
Designed to blend smoothly with existing provincial curricula, BC architects, intern architects, and architectural students work in partnership with school districts, schools and teachers to develop meaningful classroom activities and educational events. Projects may be created for science, math and art classes or as an interdisciplinary learning experience. AIS volunteers are also available to speak on architecture and the building professions as a career choice.
