Finalists of the Plage de l’Est design competition revealed

With the first stage of the Plage de l’Est design competition complete, the Borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, jointly with the Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design, is pleased to announce the names of the five finalist firms chosen by the preselection committee made up of urban development experts and citizens. The competition is for the project to develop a beach on the shore of the St. Lawrence River and promote citizen reappropriation of the waterfront. The committee studied 36 rough-sketch concepts, which were submitted anonymously. The assessment criteria that allowed the finalist projects to stand out included innovation, suggested materials and forms, landscaping, environmental considerations, integration of the project with its surroundings, and accessibility.

The finalist firms, in alphabetical order, are: Architecture Microclimat, Atelier Barda, The Commons Inc., Groupe Rousseau Lefebvre, Ruccolo + Faubert Architectes Inc. & Ni Conception, Architecture de Paysage. The preselection committee also awarded special mention to the firm Rayside Labossière architectes.

The five finalist firms now go back to their drawing boards to develop their final project concepts, which they will present to the jury on December 10, 2013 at the Maison de la culture Pointe-aux-Trembles, 14001 Notre-Dame St. East. Citizens are invited to attend the presentations.

Located in the Pointe-aux-Trembles neighbourhood, along 94e Avenue at the intersection of Bellerive Street, the Plage de l’Est project calls for repurposing of a vacant site on the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River and citizen reappropriation of the waterfront. The project is among the priority actions listed in the Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles Borough’s Plan bleu vert.

The Plage de l’Est design competition has received financial support of $100,000 along with assistance from the Bureau du design, facilitated by the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine as part of implementation of the Entente Montréal 2025.

The aim of the initiative is to promote excellence in design and architecture and contribute to asserting Montréal’s status as a UNESCO City of Design.
